The 2014 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship has started for the Iranian national team with a valuable 3-1 win against Italy in Pool D of the competitions being held in Krakow, Poland.
Iran achieved a remarkable opening victory at FIVB Men's World Championship Pool D in Krakow, after subduing Italy 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-21, 25-22) in front of nearly 7'000 Polish fans.
The Iranians started strong and claimed the first set 25-16. It was, however, the Italians who closed the second set 25-23 to level things.
From then onwards, the Iranian volleyball players took control over the game, winning the next two sets 25-21 and 25-22.
The Iranians managed to record an impressive 14 blocks against the deadly attacking force of the 8-time FIVB World League winners who had the services of the likes of Ivan Zaytsev.
Zaytsev finished as the match's top scorer with 19 points, followed by Iran's Amir Ghafour with 18 tallies.
The Asian giants will next take on the United States on Tuesday.
The 2014 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship began on August 30 and will end on September 21.
It is the fifth time that Iran is participating at the championship.
The Iranian team has been pitted against Italy, the US, Belgium, France and Puerto Rico in Pool D of the championship.
