Iranian taekwondo fighters have managed to secure the third place in the 2014 world cup taekwondo championship. Iran lost to Mexico 39-43 in a furiously close-fought match on Sunday in which the Iranian managing team was heavily critical of the way the Mexicans hosted the competition.
Mexico made it to the final but lost 26-29 to Russia which grabbed the men's title, while South Korea won the women's gold medal.
The Iranian fighters overpowered rivals from Cote d'Ivoire, South Korea and Germany in the preliminary competition.
Eight teams participated in the 2014 World Cup Taekwondo Team Championships organized by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF). Mexico's historic city of Santiago de Queretaro hosted the tournament which started Saturday and lasted until December 7.
The three top teams of the tournament added to their tally of points for fielding more athletes in the 2016 Olympic Games.
