Golestan National Park is the oldest registered national park of Iran and a unique haven for wildlife. This park has placed more than 1350 herbal and about 302 animal species within its territories.
Golestan National Park is situated in Golestan Province between the eastern parts of the Alburs Mountains and the western fringes of the Khorasan-Kopet Dag. It comprises 91,890 ha. The Park reaches from 1000 to 1400 m above sea level and has a variety of habitats, like temperate broad leaf forests, graslands, shrubs and rocky areas. The fauna is very rich and consists of leopards (Panthera pardus), wolves (Canis lupus), wild boars (Sus scrofa), maral deer (Cervus elaphus maral), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), urial (Ovis ammon arkali), wild goats (Capra aegagrus) and goitered gazelles (Gazella subgutturosa) vor.
