TEHRAN - President Hassan Rouhani has emphasized the need to expedite the construction of the Chabahar-Zahedan-Mashhad railway, which will extend 1,380 kilometers from southeast to northeast of Iran. On Tuesday, Rouhani accompanied by a delegation, traveled to the port city of Chabahar on the east coast of the Sea of Oman.
Construction of the railway is estimated to cost 20 trillion rials (about $570 million).
The first section of the railway to the length of 300 kilometers from Chabahar to Iranshahr is being constructed.
Rouhani also highlighted the importance of the Chabahar port development plan and its key role in economic progress and job creation in the region.
The Chabahar port development plan is estimated to cost 10 trillion rials (about $280 million). Once the plan is completed, the port's shipment capacity will triple to 8.5 million tons. Moreover, ships with up to 80,000 tons of capacity can anchor in the port.
Chabahar is strategically crucial as it gives access route to landlocked Afghanistan. Chabahar, which is surrounded by a free trade zone, is vital particularly since it can serve as India's entry point to Afghanistan, Central Asia and beyond.
