Iran and Britain re-established diplomatic relations starting Thursday February 20, raising each other's flags at their respective embassies in London and Tehran.

The British Foreign Secretary told AFP that Iran and Britain will now maintain direct diplomatic relations through non-resident charges d'affaires. There is still no specific date for the reopening of the embassies.

Iran-Britain relations were cut off after angry protesters stormed the British embassy to protest Britain's anti-Iran policies.

The spokesman for the British Foreign Office said that Iran has to pay for damage done to the British embassy building.

The election of Hassan Rohani last August has relieved some of the tensions between the two countries, leading to a gradual re-establishment of relations.
