Tell your senators and Obama: No threat of new Iran sanctions!

Statement by the Campaign for Peace and Democracy - January 6, 2014

No Threat of New Sanctions on Iran!
No to the U.S.-led Sanctions Program on Iran!
Yes to a Nuclear-Weapons-Free and Democratic Middle East!

cartoon by Mohsen Zarifian

When the Senate reconvenes this month, it will face a vote on the Nuclear Weapon Free Iran Act of 2013 (S. 1881), co-sponsored by a bi-partisan group of more than two dozen senators led by Foreign Relations Committee chair Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Charles Schumer (D-NY), and Mark Kirk (R-IL). Urged on by AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, and by the Israeli and Saudi Arabian governments, these hawks want to impose further conditions and threaten additional sanctions on Iran and thereby torpedo the deal currently being negotiated between Washington and Tehran; if they succeed, it will escalate tensions and increase the likelihood of war against Iran by the United States and/or Israel.

The current U.S.-led program of harsh sanctions has caused enormous suffering for ordinary people in Iran, driving up unemployment and creating shortages of medicines and other necessities of everyday life. From its inception, this program has constituted a morally unacceptable form of collective punishment of the Iranian population; new sanctions will only mean even greater mass suffering in Iran.

Neither Iran nor any other country, including the United States, has a "right" to possess nuclear weaponry. The only effective, sustainable way to discourage Iran’s nuclear program has always been to pursue a weapons-of-mass-destruction-free zone in the Middle East, prohibiting both Iran and Israel from owning nuclear weapons, and having the United States take major steps toward disarming and divesting itself of its own nuclear arsenal. The pursuit of such a policy would undermine both the incentive and the rationale for an Iranian nuclear weapons program; it would also strengthen women's, labor, and other democratic forces whose repression the Iranian government has justified in great part on the grounds of military and economic threats from abroad.

We ask you to contact your senators and urge them to vote “No” on this dangerous legislation. We also ask you to contact President Obama and call on him to revoke his threat of new sanctions if a final deal with Iran is not reached.

Disarmament and nuclear-weapons-free zones - not a policy of punitive sanctions and ominous threats of "keeping military options on the table" - are the only way forward.
