IRAN: World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director wraps up two-day visit

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director, Ms. Ertharin Cousin, wrapped up a two-day visit to the host country of second-largest population of refuges in the world, Islamic Republic of Iran, on Wednesday January 22, 2014.


Ms. Cousin visited a school where 300 primary school girls and 44 secondary school girls are benefiting from WFP Food for Girls Education programme

WFP is the largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. In Iran, WFP is responsible for food assistance to the most vulnerable Afghan and Iraqi refugees. Currently WFP Iran provides food assistance to 19 settlements in 13 provinces.

During the first day of her mission Ms. Cousin met with senior government officials, donors and the UN Community.

She visited Shahid Naseri Camp in Saveh - a city in Markazi Province of Iran - located southwest of Tehran during the second day of her mission. Shahid Naseri Camp is home to some 5,000 Afghans - hosting over 755 families.

Ms. Cousin met with Afghan refugees, visited a school where 300 primary school girls and 44 secondary school girls are benefiting from WFP Food for Girls Education programme. She also visited a warehouse where WFP food commodities are stored and distributed among the refugees.

She concluded her visit with a press conference held at United Nations Common Premises in Tehran where she told the journalists "We believe that we have the tools as a global community to not just fight hunger, but to end hunger. We have the tools today to make our generation the last generation of hungry people."

WFP Iran provides food assistance to 19 settlements in 13 provinces

This was the first visit of a WFP Executive Director to the Islamic Republic of Iran in 15 years.
