German-Iranian Woman Elected Secretary General Of The Social Democratic Party

Yasmin Fahimi, a German-Iranian woman, has been elected as the Secretary General of German co-governing Social Democratic Party (SPD). Fahimi received 492 (88.5%) of the 557 votes cast.

Social Democratic leader Sigmar Gabriel had reportedly nominated 45-year-old Yasmin Fahimi to succeed Andrea Nahles who became labor minister in the new German government.

A top labor union official, Fahimi was elected to the new powerful post in the SPD.

Born in the north German city of Hannover, Fahimiˈs father is Iranian while her mother is German.
