Iran and Turkey say clashes in Syria and Iraq must be stopped

Iran and Turkey issued a joint statement on Monday saying that the clashes in Syria and Iraq should be stopped and called for a political solution to the conflicts in the two countries based on legitimate rights of the people. The statement was released after the First Strategic High Cooperation Council of Iran-Turkey in Ankara headed by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

In the statement, both sides highlighted their commitment to boost cooperation in campaign against terrorism, organized crimes, illegal immigration, drug and weapon smuggling.

The statement said violence, extremism and sectarianism pose serious threats to the international peace and security and expressed support to the initiative by the Iranian president in the campaign against extremism and violence in the world which was endorsed by the United Nations under the name of "The World against Violence and Extremism (WAVE)".

The statement also said that all the signatories to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) have the right to use nuclear energy peacefully within the framework of international commitments.


The two countries also backed a proposal for a nuclear-free zone in the Middle East or any other kinds of weapons of mass destruction.

In the statement, the two countries called for expansion of relations bases on international law, good neighborliness and issues of mutual interest.

The two countries emphasized the importance of improving the economic relations which will result in prosperity of the two countries and help the efforts to maintain regional stability.

Rouhani arrived in Turkey on Monday for a two-day visit at the invitation of Turkish President Abdullah Gul. Some ministers including oil and economy ministers and the central bank governor accompanied the president in the trip.
