Iran is redesigning Arak reactor: AEOI Chief

The head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Ali Akbar Salehi, has said that the amount of plutonium yielded by the Arak heavy water reactor will be cut to less than 1 kg a year from 9-10 kg in its original design.

"We are currently busy redesigning that reactor," Ali Akbar Salehi told IRNA in an interview released late on Wednesday.

According to the Geneva deal or the Joint Plan of Action, Iran's needs to uranium enrichment has been has defined.

Under the Geneva deal, Iran agreed not to expand its nuclear program for six months in exchange for limited sanctions relief. The agreement came into force on January 20.


Arak heavy-water reactor

Commenting on negotiations with Russia on building of eight nuclear power plants, Salehi said constructing this number of nuclear facilities is among the long term objectives of the organization under his leadership.

But in a short term period two plants will be built, he added.

Russia built the first unit of the Bushehr nuclear power plant. The agreement was signed on August 25, 1992.

In March, Iran and Russia prepared a draft protocol according to which at least 2 new nuclear power plants will be built near the first unit of the Bushehr nuclear power station.
