SAN FRANCISCO, CA - On Sunday, February 22, over 140 members of the National Iranian American Council (NIAC), Iranian American Bar Association (IABA), Havaar, and National Lawyers' Guild (NLG) attended a charity fundraiser in San Francisco to raise awareness about the impact of US sanctions on ordinary Iranians' medical access. Proceeds from this event benefited local non-profit Mom's Against Poverty (MAP)'s medical charity initiatives in Iran. The event was a success due to the hard work of several amazing volunteers: huge congrats to Mana Barari, Guissu Raafat, Maryam Ziaei, and Roxanne for their hard work!
Tens of thousands of Iranians with serious illnesses have suffered unnecessarily because current US sanctions have led to dire shortages of life-saving medicines such as chemotherapy drugs. While current US sanctions technically exempt the sale or donation of humanitarian goods like medicine and medical supplies to Iran, in practice sanctions that have cut off Iranian banks from the international financial system have prevented pharmaceutical and medical supply companies from conducting vital business with Iran. As a result, medicine supplies have dwindled, prices have skyrocketed, and ordinary Iranians are suffering. For more info, see our NIAC Policy Memo on this topic.
