The Leader made the remarks in an address to a number of people from Iran's medical community at a meeting in Tehran on Monday held to commemorate International Midwives' Day, which is celebrated on May 5.

"A large young population is an advantage for the country, and if we continue to implement wrong policies and measures which will lead to a sharp decline in the country's young population over the next years, we will suffer a big blow, called widespread elderliness," he said.

"A country without a young population is a country without creativity, progress, excitement, and enthusiasm, so the vital plan to increase the population must be pursued seriously," he added.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Ayatollah Khamenei highlighted the importance of taking measures to encourage the people to make use of the services provided by midwives in order to help implement the major policy of increasing the country's population.
