Iran's Rostami snatches gold medal at Weightlifting World Championships

Iran's Kianoush Rostami won a gold medal in the Men's 85kg at the 2014 Weightlifting World Championships on Thursday. Rostami snatched 178kg and lifted 213kg in the clean and jerk and took the gold with a combined total lift of 391kg.

"I am angry because I wanted to break the world record," Rostami said in the post match news conference.

"I will do it in the next year," he added.

The 2015 World Weightlifting Championships will be held in Houston, the United States.

"I want to win a gold medal in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio as well," Rostami stated.

Bulgarian Ivan Markov finished in the second place with a total lift of 390kg.

Artem Okulov from Russia claimed the bronze medal with 385kg.

In September, the Iranian lifter came second in the 2014 Asian Games behind Chinese Tian Tao with a total lift of 380kg.

The 2014 World Weightlifting Championships are underway in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

The event, which ends on November 16, serves as a qualifier for the 2016 Summer Olympics.
