Dr. Hulki Uz, United Nations Population Funds (UNFPA) Representative in Iran, said people above 60 years old constitute 8.1% of the population and that growth rate of the population of the elderly is higher than other population groups.

He said based on population forecasts, Iranian elderly will comprise 30 million of the population in the year 1429 (2050), adding that UNPFA in close cooperation with the National Council of the Elderly and the academics makes efforts to draw the attention of all to the importance of ageing.
He said recently with cooperation of the Tehran University's Demography Department and Iran Statistics Center a report has been prepared on analyzing ageing situation in Iran.
The UNPFA representative said the need for implementation of integrated national policy of the elderly with emphasis on health and social issues is among proposals included in the report. He said the National Council of the Elderly is implementing the plan with the cooperation of UNPFA and other relevant organizations.
He appreciated the close cooperation between UNPFA and Iran's National Council for the Elderly, Iran's Welfare Organization and Ministry of Cooperative, Labor and Social Welfare for compilation of policies in proportion with the needs of the elderly.
The UN official said population studies show that the world population of the elderly in 2050 will reach 2 billion. The figure was 840 million in 2013, he said, adding that in 2050 out of each 10 elderly 8 will live in less developed countries.
