Flights from Abadan and Ahvaz in southwestern Iran have been cancelled due to poor visibility caused by increased dust in the air.

The Tasnim News Agency reports that the head of the Khuzestan Meteorology office said: "Rainfall has declined by 30 percent compared to last year and this is one of the main reasons for dry soil all across the province and the increase in airborne dust particles."

The drying out of lakes and lagoons in the region is cited as one of the main reasons for the dust storms plaguing cities in Khuzestan.

The Khuzestan Crisis Management Centre has issued a warning to pregnant women, seniors and those suffering from respiratory diseases to avoid going out as much as possible.

Schools have cancelled their afternoon sessions in order to reduce traffic while the dust lingers.

The city of Ahvaz is the capital of the Iranian province of Khuzestan. It is built on the banks of the Karun River and is situated in the middle of Khuzestan Province. The city has an average elevation of 20 meters above sea level. The city had a population of 1,338,126 in 2006.
