Signing his contract with Iran's Basketball Federation, Dirk Bauermann became the head coach of Iran's national team. The former coach of Germany Dirk Bauermann was appointed as new head coach of Iran's national basketball team on Monday penning a three-month contract.
It was a week that the technical committee of Iran Basketball Federation was mulling over the 61-year-old coach as the leading candidate for the position.
Iran had already reached an agreement with Serbian coach Luka Pavicevic but newly-reappointed President of the Federation Mahmoud Mashhoon disagreed with the candidate.
Since 2013, Iran has been the dominant force in Asian basketball with the Iranian national outfit winning three out of the last four of FIBA Asia Championship tournaments. All this was made under Memi Becirovic, the Slovenian predecessor of Pavicevic, who also led Iran to 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain.
On Monday, Bauermann travelled to Tehran and finalized the contract.
Defending champion Iran must participate in the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship where Bauermann will coach Iran in China from September 23 to October 3.
Iran's national basketball squad has been pitted against Japan, Malaysia and South Asia Qualifier in Group A.
Being successful to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games, the Iranian federation will extend Bauermann's contract until the 2016 Olympic Games.
Bauermann led Germany basketball team between 2003 and 2011 where he won the EuroBasket 2005.He has also led Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich and Poland national basketball team.
Coaching since 1989, Bauermann has won 9 German League championships and 4 German Cups, and was four times named the German League's Coach of the Year.
