Talks to lift UN sanctions may thwart Republican senators

World powers have begun talks on lifting US sanctions on Iran as a result of the possible agreement between Iran and the 5+1 to end their nuclear disputes. A report on Reuters indicates that such a move would restrict any attempt by U.S. Congress to undo a deal.

Recently, a letter signed by 47 U.S. Senators was sent to Iran's Supreme Leader, warning him that a deal with the Obama administration last only until Barack Obama leaves the White House. The letter has been heavily criticized by both U.S. and Iranian administrations.

Talks between Iran and the 5+1, which will resume next week, have reached a pivotal stage.

"If there's a nuclear deal, and that still a big "if", we'll want to move quickly on the UN sanctions issue," Reuters quoted a Western official.

Since 2006 the UN has Security Council has passed several resolutions imposing sanctions on Iran, which include a ban on uranium enrichment and the buying and selling of atomic technology as well as an arms embargo.

Iran reengaged in nuclear talks with the 5+1 in the fall of 2013 but so far they have not reached a final agreement. The parties have set a March 31 deadline to reach a deal on the general framework of the agreement and then must work out the details by the end of June.

The issues still under debate are the acceptable levels of uranium enrichment and the time line for the lifting of sanctions against Iran.
