“Negin (a Spirit Summoning)” : published in 2005, Negin potrays the predicament of women in contemporary Iran. It is the saga of a young woman put on trial by those who love her dearly. It is the tale of a society that, with good intentions, pushes its victims to the verge of destruction and then blames them for their suffering.

“Negin” is the fourth play in a series of contemporary Iranian plays directed by Hamid Ehya for the Iranian Studies Program at Stanford University. Previous productions include: ‘Interview’ by Mohammad Rahmanian, ‘The Road’ (co-directed with Sepideh Khosrowjah) by Yourik Karim Masihi, and ‘Sleeping in an Empty Cup’ by Naghmeh Samini.

About the playwright: Hamid Amjad is an award winning Playwright, director, actor, and scholar. Over the last twenty-five years, he has published more than twenty plays, three film scripts, two short story collections, and two studies on Iranian theater. Some of his plays have been translated into other languages. In 2012, Amjad directed his first feature movie, “Laboratory”, with a notable cast including Reza Kianian, Afshin Heshemi, and Baran Kowsari.

He holds a BA in Cinema and a MA and PhD in Arts Research. In 2014, the Iranian Association of Theater Writers and Critics presented him with the prestigious Noushin Medal for his contribution to Iranian theater. Hamid Amjad, along with his wife and colleague, Jila Esmailian, runs Nila Publications, specializing in books about theater and cinema.

Hamid Ehya (director) studied theater at Tehran University and received his MA in Performance Studies from New York University. He is a published play translator and his articles have appeared in Persian theater journals. In 2009, his translation of Copenhagen won the “best translation of the year” award from the Iranian Playwrights Association. Ehya has worked with Darvag Theater Group as a director, actor, and translator since 1985. Amongst his acting credits is Beyzaie’s ‘Ardaviraf's Report’.


Sepideh Khosrowjah is a director, actor, and playwright. Her collection of plays, ‘Morgh e Sahar and other plays’ is published in Iran by Nila publications. In the last 25 years, her plays have been performed by Darvag in the USA and by various Iranian groups in Iran. Her last play in English, ‘It’s Not About Pomegranates’ was performed at Boxcar Theater in San Francisco in 2012. She recently appeared in 'Interview', ‘The Road,' and 'Sleeping in an Empty Cup' at Stanford University. In 2015, she appeared in Mr. Beyzaie’s ‘Ardaviraf's Report’.

Shima Khaki studied fine arts at Tehran University and received her MFA in Design from California College of the Arts. She started collaborating with Darvag Theater Group three years ago by appearing in ‘Writing in the Dark’, ‘Bear’, and ‘Red and others’. She recently performed in ‘Interview’ and ‘Sleeping in an Empty Cup’ directed by Hamid Ehya at Stanford University. She last appeared in Beyzaie’s ‘Ardaviraf's Report’.

Hossein Mirzamohammadi is a writer, director, and actor in the areas of film, theater, and radio. He studied theatre at Tehran University and Tabriz University. He is currently completing an MFA in Cinema at the Academy of Art University and pursuing further theatre training at A.C.T. Studio. Writing and directorial credits include: ‘Story of a Rainy Night’, ‘Unripe Apple’, ‘The Little Black Fish’, ‘From Someone who is no Longer There’, ‘Medea’, ‘Narrative of a Passing Wind’, and ‘Dark Flaky Picture’. He last appeared in Beyzaie’s ‘Ardaviraf's Report’.

Anita Maghdouri Moghadam is a mechanical engineering graduate from University of Maryland and currently practices in the field of energy engineering in San Francisco. She appeared in Beyzaie’s ‘Ardaviraf's Report’ at Stanford University. Her appearance in “Negin” is her first collaboration with Darvag Theater Group.

Ali Zandiyeh has received his BA in Dramatic Literature from Azad University in Arak, Iran and has participated in several student productions. In 2015, he appeared in Beyzaie’s ‘Ardaviraf's Report’ at Stanford University. Acting in "Negin" is his first collaboration with Darvag Theater Group.
