Khamenei: No Nuclear Deal Unless Sanctions Are Lifted

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said world powers must lift international sanctions as part of a landmark nuclear agreement. In remarks broadcast live on state television on September 3, Khamenei warned that "there will be no deal" if the sanctions are not lifted.

He said Iran would only partially comply with its commitments if the sanctions are merely suspended.

Under the July 14 agreement between Tehran and world powers, sanctions will be gradually lifted in return for Iran imposing curbs on nuclear activities, which the West suspects are aimed at making an atomic bomb.

Khamenei, who has the final say on all state affairs in Iran, also said he favored a parliamentary vote on the deal, which President Hassan Rohani has opposed.

A special committee set up by parliament has already begun reviewing the agreement.

The speaker of Iran's parliament says he expects a heated debate among Iranian lawmakers on the nuclear deal between Tehran and major powers. Ali Larijani predicted that Iran's debate would be even more dramatic than the one now taking place in the U.S. Congress because of opposition from some members.

Larijani, in New York for a UN gathering of parliamentary speakers, said a committee had been established in the Majlis, Iran's parliament, to assess the deal.

A senior Iranian lawmaker told reporters that the committee would reach a decision within weeks, with a parliamentary vote in around a month.

Larijani said he personally considered the agreement good. But he cautioned that there was some stiff opposition to the deal, under which sanctions on Iran will be lifted gradually in exchange for at least a decade of curbs on Tehran's nuclear program.

Earlier, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said world powers must lift international sanctions and not merely suspend them.

Iran will only see sanctions relief if it complies with the nuclear deal, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said later on September 3.
