On Thursday, the Persians registered their first straight-sets win of the tournament by seeing off the South Americans 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-15) in a match played at the Hamamatsu Arena in the western Japanese city of Hamamatsu.
The Iranians started the match with vim and vigor, and dug and spiked effectively throughout the first set, making it difficult for the opposite side to earn points.
The Iranian volleyball players, who mostly had control of the set, eventually won it 25-20.
Iran's squad kept its dominant performance in the second set of the game with some good attacks, and managed to chalk up a four-point lead in a little while. The sportsmen heightened pressure on their Venezuelan counterparts, and won the set 25-27 at last.
Iran extended its supremacy to the third set, and stood firm against the South American side to power through. The Iranians ultimately claimed the set 25-15 and ended the game.
Iran’s 24-year-old Amir Ghafour was named the top scorer of the match with 13 points. Captain Kervin Pinerua was Venezuela's top scorer with 10.
Iran’s coach Slobodan Kovac praised his team after the game. “It was a very good game. I hope Iranian players carry on with such a performance. We had good reception and blocked most of the attacks... We have a day off before the showdown against Poland. We should do our best to achieve the favorable result.”
Iranian captain Saeed Marouf said, “We did not underestimate the Venezuelan team, analyzed it in depth, and availed ourselves of the squad’s mistakes today.”
Venezuela’s coach Vincenzo Nacci said, “We should forget all about today’s match, and concentrate on our own tactical advancement. We will try to deliver better performances in the next encounters.”
The Iranian volleyball players will return to action on September 12, when they take on defending champion Poland in its fourth match.
The 2015 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Cup started in Japan on September 8, and will finish on September 23.
The tournament is a qualification process for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The top two teams will qualify for the Olympics and join Brazil, which has already secured a berth as the host country.
