Iranian President Hassan Rohani has said that ties with the United States had improved, but there was a "long road to travel" before their relations could normalize. "The situation has certainly changed," Rohani said on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York to a group of senior editors from media organizations.

He called the nuclear deal reached between Iran and world powers as a "big test" for U.S.-Iranian relations.

The White House has said that there was no planned meeting between Rohani and Obama while they are at the UN in the coming days.

Rohani said that "before talking about meetings or handshakes," the countries should focus on resolving issues.

Responding to media reports that Iran and Russia are part of a coalition that would fight Islamic State and other militant groups in Syria, Rohani said that he does not see "a coalition between Iran and Russia on fighting terrorism."

Both Russia and Iran support the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
