Police in Tehran have reportedly prevented a planned gathering in front of Afghanistan's embassy in memory of a young Afghan girl who was raped and murdered earlier this month in Varamin, near the capital.

Citizen journalists and witnesses have reported that police forces prevented them from lighting candles for the young Afghan girl, Setayesh Ghoreishi, outside the Afghan embassy.

Iran's semi-official ISNA news agency reported that police had said that the gathering did not have a permit.

The news agency reported that several Afghans who had tried to gather at another location had been detained.

The rape and murder of Setayesh has led to an outpour of solidarity and sympathy for her family through online social networks.

Reports say she was kidnapped on April 9by a 17-year-old son of a neighbor who raped and killed her.

Iranian authorities have said that the accused has confessed to his crime and that he will face a "decisive action."
