Parliament in Iran has confirmed the reelection of its long-serving speaker for another year. According to state TV, Ali Larijani received 237 votes out of 276 lawmakers present on May 31 in the 290-seat house.
Analysts say the 59-year-old Larijani's election marks an early victory for the moderate conservatives in the new parliament, which convened for the first time over the weekend.
On May 29, he was voted interim speaker, pending the verification of the credentials of new parliament members.
