Organised by: Iran Heritage Foundation
Date: Monday 4th July 2016, 6.30pm
Venue: Asia House, 63 New Cavendish Street, London W1G 7LP

Description

For thousands of years the lion played an important role in the identity of Iran and as an iconic symbol of the country, but sadly the lion is now extinct in Iran.

This talk will preview an exhibition due to open at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tehran in March 2017 entitled ‘The Lion in Iran and the Art of Parviz Tanavoli’. The exhibition will include objects from the National Museum in Tehran featuring lions, plus lion rugs, locks and other objects collected by Mr Tanavoli. It will also showcase works of art by Mr Tanavoli that feature lions or have been influenced by his love of lions and will act as a reminder of the importance of the lion as a symbol of Iran. The exhibition is being organised by the IHF, in conjunction with the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Biography

Parviz Tanavoli is an artist, collector, scholar, and teacher, and among the foremost contemporary Iranian artists. His work, which includes painting, drawing, weavings, and prints, is infused with his deep knowledge of Iran’s rich visual and literary heritage. He is a founding member of the Saqqakhaneh artistic movement, which began in the 1960s. He is probably most famous for his Heech motif, but he also has a long established love of lions which is reflected not only in his artwork but also in his collection.
