Reza Alipour from Iran claimed a gold medal at the IFSC Climbing World Championships in Innsbruck, Austria on Thursday. The Iranian climber took the gold with a time of 5.630, beating his French rival Bassa Mawem.
The bronze medal went to Russian climber Stanislav Kokorin who beat Chinese
Alipour has defined himself as the Usain Bolt of speed climbing.
The competition has drawn 531 athletes from 57 countries. With climbing to
make its Olympic debut in 2020, the world championships for the first time is
having an Olympic-format combined competition, in which athletes vie for an
all-around title in lead climbing, speed climbing and bouldering.
The championships run through Sept. 16.
