A report by Iran's ministry of industry shows that production of primary aluminum in three major smelters in the country have decreased by over a third in the initial five months of the current Iranian calendar year.
The report covered in the official IRNA agency on Tuesday showed that production
in the three main smelters, namely the Iranian Aluminum Company (IRALCO), the
Hormozal Aluminum and Almahdi Co. totaled 103,593 tons between late March and
late August, down 32 percent compared to the similar period in 2018.
However, it said IRALCO, the largest aluminum producer located in central Iran, recorded a one-percent increase in production till late August, reaching an output of 75,763 tons.
Output at the two other smelters were significantly down, said the report, with Hormozal producing 13,600 tons, down 71 percent, and Almahdi reporting a 59-percent decrease with 12,018 tons of production.
Total production of the three smelters in the Iranian month spanning July and August was around 20,000 tons, said the report, with IRALCO being the sole producer reporting a slight increase.
It said Iran's total production of alumina, a white powder used to produce aluminum, also decreased in the five-month period with production remaining just below 100,000 tons, down four percent compared to the same period last year.
It said Jajarm alumina plant, the largest in the country, produced 19,412 tons of the powder between March and August this year, marking a four-percent decrease compared to the same period in 2018.
The significant decrease in primary aluminum production in Iran comes despite a reverse trend reported in other metal sectors, including in steel and raw iron, where mills across Iran have reported increased output and exports over the past months.
Iran says July-August exports of steel up by 37%
